Style and Performance

CGD ICeGaN® power devices enable super-compact consumer products by minimising the space needed for mains power conversion while meeting new regulatory energy consumption requirements.

Application Requirements:

Power Factor Correction (PFC)
Normally required in most jurisdictions as the SMPS power level increases.

Very low standby power
Required in most jurisdictions - not only for “no load” situations but also in very light load conditions for products that are always-on.

Compact size
Increasing the switching frequency for the power conversion stages allows for smaller sized transformers and capacitors, although power losses will typically increase. Use ICeGaN® technology for both small size and high efficiency.

High efficiency
Power conversion efficiency is both a regulatory and application requirement. For very compact products, the waste heat must be minimised to avoid internal overheating. For always-on products, power efficiency is also important in light load conditions and brief periods of activity. Achieve High Efficiency as well as High Frequency operation by using CGDs ICeGaN® technology.

Techniques & Topologies

dc_dc

LLC DC-DC converter

A DC-DC conversion provides a low voltage output, current regulation, and safety isolation. The LLC configuration achieves very high efficiency because it can operate in zero-volt and zero-current switching mode, which greatly reduces losses. High frequency operation, enabled by CGD GaN technology ensures also best in class power density.

ac_dc

Totem-Pole Power Factor Correction

After a PFC stage, DC-DC conversion provides low voltage output, current regulation, and safety isolation suitable for operating the load. The LLC configuration achieves very high efficiency because it can operate in zero-volt and zero-current switching mode, which greatly reduces losses. High frequency operation, enabled by CGD GaN technology means small size as well.

dc_dc

Flyback DC-DC converter

In lower power, less demanding applications, flyback converters with single power switches can offer economical solutions. If some flicker is acceptable, then power factor correction and DC-DC conversion can be combined in one stage. Power losses can be minimised by using quasi-resonant operation. Active clamp Flyback for optimised losses requires an additional low power switch but is valuable for best performance. High frequency operation, enabled by ICeGaN® achieves all of this as well as compact overall size.
