With the battle for electric vehicle market dominance firmly focused on range, anything that helps extend the distance an electric vehicle can travel on a single charge will find favour with manufacturers and consumers alike. With greater reliability and reduced power loss, employing GaN transistors for non-core electronics such as on-board phone charging, or navigation and entertainment systems, reduces the drain on the batteries and helps extend the vehicle’s range.

It is likely that as awareness and acknowledgement of the advantageous properties of GaN transistors continues to grow, manufacturers will start to employ GaN technology to maximise the direct output from the electric vehicle batteries themselves.
